A fine arts graduate of West Virginia University, Lynn Goldstein was employed for seventeen years as a graphic designer and illustrator in the Washington DC area before following her passion for painting. Her former focus on graphic design provides a solid compositional understanding in her fine artwork.
Ms. Goldstein has enjoyed painting many varied subjects, but her current concentration is the landscape, with a particular focus on trees. Using pastels as her medium of choice, she layers color upon color to create luminous passages in her pieces. "I work in the pastel medium because I enjoy holding color in my hands. As a result of pastel's immediacy (there are no brushes or mediums to distance me from my painting), I am able to move the color around on paper to better evoke the emotions that I experience with the subject matter."
Ms. Goldstein is a member of the Pastel Society of America and a signature member of the Maryland Pastel Society where she also served on the board of directors. She is also a juried member of the Workhouse Artist Association in Lorton, Virginia. Her work has received numerous national awards and has been exhibited in juried shows across the country. Most recently, Ms. Goldstein’s work was profiled in the August 2009 issue of Pastel Journal magazine, which also included an article that Ms. Goldstein wrote to encourage artists to look at their work from a different perspective.
Ms. Goldstein teaches drawing, portraiture, and pastels to adults in Fairfax County and has also taught workshops in the mid-Atlantic area. A popular teacher, she received an outstanding instructor award from Fairfax County, Virginia in 2006. Additionally, Ms. Goldstein has taught workshop classes at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, where she also regularly volunteers her time as a docent.
